Bookishly Me

Wallflower: Pray You Aren't Noticed (Harbinger Mystery Series - Book 2) - Carolyn McCray No the blurb does not reveal a whole lot, I know, and I don't think I will let you know much more about the story. Why? Well If I have learned anything from reading Carolyn McCray's books it is you just need to read it.

The story starts off with action right away which had me on the edge of my seat right from the start. And fortunately that stayed that way throughout the story.

I love Kent, he is arrogant and bolt, but I am unable to hate him for it. Then there is his relationship with Nicole, who is quite the opposite from Kent, but they are so good together.

Carolyn McCray can come up with some of the most sick serial killers, it gives the story just that extra "creepy" factor which I love.

I thought that with Plain Jane (the first book in the series) Carolyn McCray surprised me with the ending, but I can tell you I did not see this one coming. There are lots of twist and turns in this story and the ending was a complete surprise. This with the high "creepy" factor this story has made for a very enjoyable story.
Targeted - Carolyn McCray Nice in between story. I like Rebecca and Brandt. Can't wait to read Havoc now.

Seize the Night (Dark-Hunter, #6)

Seize the Night (Dark-Hunter, #6) - Sherrilyn Kenyon Sometimes I forget how much I really enjoy this series read it in one sitting and it has been a long time since I read a book in one sitting.

Back from the Dead

Back from the Dead - Peter Leonard *This review contains spoiler from the first book Voices of the Dead*

I was not expecting a sequel to Voices of the dead so I was quite surprised when I got the review request, don't get me wrong it was a very pleasant surprise.
Back from the Dead picks up soon after Voices of the Dead ends. Harry is under the presumption Hess is dead and he is able to pick up his normal life. But it seems faith did not grant Harry the time to grieve over the loss of his daughter. Hess is back and will do anything to finish what he started.

Again Peter Leonard has written a strong story. He just knows how far to go without going over the edge. The same characters from Voices of the Dead make their entree in Back from the Dead. Again this story is full of action and the writing makes the story come alive.

I very much enjoy Peter Leonard's books and I can honostly say I can not wait to read more books written by him.
Shadow of Time - Jen Minkman With Shadow of Time Jen Minkman has written an amazing and original love story. Shadow of Time is a very good read and I enjoyed every minute of it.

I have not yet read any books that revolve around the Native Amarican culture and Jen Minkman knows how to explain the culture and mix it great into the story without just smacking some information on the pages. She paid lots of attention to the rituals and traditions.

'It's all in the details' and you know what that is so true for this story. The writing is very detailed but Jen Minkman does not overdo it, she knows what to unveil at the right time.
From the first page you are drawn into the story and the writing will have you hooked.

I was very happy while reading Shadow of Time and just as much about the story as about the writing.
The Christmas Shoes - Donna VanLiere Such a sad but beautiful story. Absolutely loved it altough I was in great need for some tissues. How such a small thing can change so much. Definitely a perfect Christmas read.

Onzichtbaar

Fallen Legion - Laura Kreitzer Fallen Legion is the 4th book in the Timeless series. I am not a big fan of reading books out of order. But I already read Phantom Universe (The Summer Chronicles) by Laura Kreitzer, which I really enjoyed, so I thought I’d take a gamble. And I did not regret this.

Eventhough there is enough I missed since I didn’t read the first 3 books, I was able to pick up on the story real fast. Fallen Legion is a fast paced story, with interesting characters who I can’t wait to get to know better. Laura’s writing makes sure you get pulled into the story and will not let you go untill the last page. She makes sure you get immersed into this world of Angels, Gods and Emperyean Guards.

After reading Fallen Legion I will definitely read the rest of the Timeless series, starting with Shadow of the Sun.
Traitor Angel - H. David Blalock What if in the war between good and evil, good had to retreat and evil won. And what if the world did not know evil won but was convinced good had won. Well that is the world created by Blalock.

I always like find a new author who has created a new world for me to discover. Eventhough the fight between good and evil isn’t quite new, the world created by Blalock is. Not only does evil rule without people knowing it, the story is partly set in an advance virtual reality.

I really enjoyed Traitor Angel. It is a fast read, with lots of plotting, action and leaves a lot of questions unanswered. It felt like this was a build up to a great finale with the third installment.

I do recommend to read the first book in this series, AngelKiller, first. I haven’t read AngelKiller yet and at times I really felt I missed something. So I will be reading AngelKiller real soon.
Spook House - Michael West Spook House is a spooky read which keeps you on the edge of you seat. It’s a perfect Halloween read and definitely not for the squeamisch.

In the small town of Harmony strange things are happening. In an old house a man disappears and his girlfriend is attacked by something she can only discribe as a spider dog. And these are not the only people who get attacked and a man is on his way to Harmony with nothing good on his mind.

Spook House is a fast read. It was really hard to sat the book aside once I started reading. Micheal West makes sure you are sucked into the tory and just doesn’t let go. I was sitting on the edge of my seat just to see if they would survive.
The writing is smooth and gives the story that extra spooky atosphere which makes this such a great Haloween read. Also I liked the characters, I didn’t have a moment where I thought they should die just because of the stupidity that characters may have in horror stories and I am good to be cheering for someones death when it comes to stupidity and characters.

Allthough this is the third book in a series that’s not a problem to enjoy this story. Spook House is the first book I read by Michael West and I absolutely enjoyed this one and will definitely be picking up his other books.
Kingdom (Tiber City, #1) - Anderson O'Donnell Kingdom is a debut by Anderson O’Donnell en with Tiber City he has created a gritty disturbing world set in the near future.

The story is told from different point of views and this makes sure you get to see the whole thing from all the different angles this world has to offer.

The two characters that stick out the most are Jonathan Campbell a geneticist and cofounder of Morrison Biotech and Dyland Fitzgerald, the son of the late US senator. Both characters have a self destructive lifestyle and dealing with their own issues. You I’m not a big fan of troublesome characters but O’Donnell knows how to make sure these two fit into the story with giving the problems the upper hand.

But what I found to be the best part of this book was this gritty and disturbing world O’Donnell created with Tiber City, genetic experiments to decipher the ‘Omega gene’ the one thing they think will help create the perfect human being.

This was not a fast read and I really needed to pay attention while reading it. But that was no problem at all. O’Donnell’s writing and worldbuilding makes sure you keep interested en flipping the pages to see what will happen next.
This is the first installment in his Tiber City series and I must say I’m looking forward to his next installment.
Bone Wires - Michael Shean I absolutely loved the premise of this story and the story itself did not disapoint.

Dan Grey works as a homicide detective and dreams of a big break (or a sexy case as he calls it) so he can get his Amber badge. And this happens when he gets three homicides in the same week. Working to solve these cases with limited resources Dan will find out not everything is what it may seem.

Dan Grey is a character that can annoy the hell out of me but not enough that I dislike him. He is a good detective with his heart in the right place that has some serious jealousy issues. He wants to get up the corporate ladder and the sooner the better.

I liked the world created by mr. Shean. This whole world about a corporate police department is a very unsettling thought, I mean it isn’t great to know the ploce will solve crimes only to make profit. The police here also think that they are better then the other just by their rank and please don’t let anybody higher in rank get on your case because that is bad. Yeah teamwork isn’t a big part here in solving crimes.

I really did get annoyed by the fact that seemingly a lot of people here are very beautiful and this isn’t stated ones but numerous times.

Due to the horrific crimes and the strong language in this book I can definitely say this is not a book for everyone, but if you can handle it I can recommend this to you because it is a fast read, a good story in a great, but unsettling world.

Carpathia (Angry Robot)

Carpathia - Matt Forbeck After the Titanic hits the iceberg you think the survivors have left the worst part behind them, being rescues by the Carpthia, but there is something lurking in the shadows of the Carpathia and it is getting tired of hiding.

I really enjoyed reading Carpathia. It is a fast pasted read and I kept flipping the pages to see what would happen next. The vampires in this book are old school aka dangerous. They left the new country because they got careless and survival has always been keeping to themselves and hiding in the shadows for them. Now they are on their way to the old world to make sure they don't get exposed to the humans. But hiding on a ship full of humans might not have been their best idea and that is when people start to disapear.

I enjoyed reading Carpathia, although I was not a big fan of the characters. To be honost I did not like the characters at all. Also the love triangle was a bit much. However the writing and the story make up for that part. This was a quick read and highly enjoyable if you like a scary read, that is not to serious.
